Opposition candidates should be given access to state mass media and the political persecution of independent mass media should be stopped.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution welcoming the release of Belarusian political prisoners and urged the Belarusian authorities to conduct the presidential election according to the international norms on September 10.

The release of political prisoners may be the first step on the way to ‘the improvement of Belarus-EU relations’, Radio Liberty reports.

MEPs also urged the Belarusian authorities to give opposition candidates access to state mass media and stop the political persecution of independent mass media.

The European Commission should render financial and political assistance to the Belarusian civil society, independent mass media and NGOs, MEPs demanded. The European Parliament urged the European Commission to accelerate the negotiations on the visa regime facilitation for Belarus.
