Belarus needs to ensure a quality and possibly quick transition from getting foreign loans to attracting foreign direct investment, Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said at the opening of the forum Broadening the Horizons: Investment, Finance, Development in Minsk on 29 September.

“We need to target our investment policy at concrete investors, be well aware of their expectations and possible fears”, the official underlined.

In his words, amid uncertainty and growing global risks, the fight to attract capital, ground-breaking technology and quality management is escalating. He pointed at the importance of building a dialogue with the business community.

“I’d like to underline that Belarus is switching to a new level of interaction with international financial institutions. By joint effort we work out and implement structural policies in economy and finance spheres that will serve as foundation for program policies of Belarus in short and long-term perspective. We intend to build cooperation with the business community on the same principles.”

Minsk is hosting the forum Broadening the Horizons: Investment, Finance, Development on 29-30 September. The forum has gathered nearly 300 participants and is expected to encourage an open dialogue between representatives of Belarus’ government bodies, international financial institutions, foreign investors, the Belarusian authorities, national business and experts in order to discuss current aspects of investment cooperation.

Representatives of international financial institutions present at the Forum have pointed out to numerous problems and the need to carry out reforms. Investors need to clearly understand what Belarus is ready to do promote futher change, create conditions favorable for investment and enhance its reputation.
