Belarus 31st in info and communications technology development globally, new report says
Belarus has risen two places up to 31st place out of 175 countries in the ITU’s annual Measuring the Information Society Report. According to the report, the world is getting more and more connected and reveals that there are still huge investment opportunities for the private sector to connect the unconnected.

In the 2016 report, Belarus got 7.26 in IDI value and ranked between Israel and the Czech Republic.

Belarus appears to be the only CIS country that has improved its position in the ranking this year. All others either retained their global ranking or saw it decline.

Moreover, the country’s result is significantly better than its expected position, based on the gross national income per capita.

Belarus is also named among the countries that stand out for having low absolute fixed-broadband prices – USD 7.2 in this case. In most countries of the world, fixed-broadband services cost between USD 10 and 40, the report says.

But Belarus still lags behind in Internet speed in CIS group, offering planes with speeds of between 2 and 10 Mbit/s. The highest speeds, and unlimited data plans, are offered in Georgia, Moldova and the Russian Federation.

14th ITU World Telecommunication/ICT Indicators Symposium (WTIS-2016) took place in Gaborone, Botswana from 21 to 23 November. The 2016 edition of the Measuring the Information Society Report was released as part of the forum. The report reflects the level of ICT development in 175 economies worldwide.

The IDI is a composite index that combines 11 indicators into one benchmark measure which can be used to monitor and compare developments in ICT between countries and over time.
