Wizz Air’s Coming To Belarus Is On Hold, Timetable Yet To Be Agreed On
In spring 2020, the Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air was expected to start a direct flight from Minsk to Budapest. However, plans seem to change as the airline is yet to respond to the notice about Minsk Airport’s readiness to include their flights to a summer timetable.

The Ministry of Transport explained that the final decision is with the airline, but so far no official response has been received. The summer flight timetable is expected to come in force on 29 March.

“We have completed all the necessary procedures on our part. Wizz Air was given the right to undergo all the procedures in accordance with our legislation.

As far as I know, they are negotiating ground services with Minsk National Airport right now,” explained Vladimir Shibitsky, the representative of the Aviation Department.

The Department of Aviation, as well as the Ministry of Transport, confirms that there has not yet been an official response from Wizz Air regarding their decision on flights from Minsk.

Last summer local aviation authorities signed a memorandum with the Hungarian Aviation Administration. It was assumed that the flight Minsk-Budapest will be daily. The flights to regional cities of Belarus or other EU capitals were not discussed.

“Besides discounts on ground handling, low-cost companies also require a certain percentage for the sale of duty-free units. But we can have some conditions too.

Let’s say they don’t pay for ground handling at airports, but they should bring 100 thousand tourists here,” said Director of Aviation Department Artyom Sikorsky.

Wizz Air is a Hungarian low-cost airline with its head office in Budapest. The airline serves many cities across Europe, as well as some destinations in North Africa and the Middle East.

Belarus Ministry of Transport earlier stated its interest in low-cost flights to regional cities of Belarus. Then a strategy on the development of regional airports which involved the creation of a low-cost base in Grodno was adopted.
