Yury Karayew appointed interior minister
Alyaksandr Lukashenka on Tuesday appointed Yury Karayew to serve as Belarus’ minister of internal affairs.

Prior to the appointment, Mr. Karayew had served as deputy interior minister/commander of the Interior Troops.

Mr. Karayew succeeded Ihar Shunevich, who resigned from the position on June 10 after holding it since May 2012.

“Today I offered my resignation to the head of state and he accepted it,” General Shunevich told reporters on Monday following his meeting with Alyaksandr Lukashenka. “I hope I will be able to be of use to our state in another position or in another job.”

Mr. Shunevich noted that his decision to resign was a “balanced, right and timely one.”

Mr. Shunevich claimed that he had done a lot of work while serving as minister. “At a certain moment I started to realize that it was necessary to ensure the soundness, consistency, speed and effectiveness of decision-making. It is rather difficult to keep up at times,” he said. “Firstly, there is a need for a fresh look at the ministry`s work. Secondly, as far as my efficiency is concerned, I believe the time has come for me to pick another line of work. I’ve been minister for a rather long time. I may have lost the freshness of vision. Maybe, I really need to try something different. This is the only reason. I told the head of state about it and he agreed.”
