US Expects Steps Forward from Belarus

Euroradio

The United States will not change its principal position over the assessment of the human rights protection in Belarus, reports Belapan that the American diplomats told journalists during the Ambasovishcha music festival in Raubichy.

The festival was held for the last time this year, because the United States has to refuse from its Ambassador's residence in this ski resort near Minsk. "The house has been empty for two years and there are no signals that the situation will change. It makes no sense to pay for something that is not used", US Charge d'Affairs in Minsk Michael Scanlan said.

The US mission in Belarus has been headed by Charge d'Affairs since March 2008, when Minsk recalled its ambassador in Washington and forced America to do the same.

The US diplomat noted that if the government of Belarus wished to cooperate, it should make a step forward.
