Belarus expert group to review OSCE recommendations

The Belarusian leader has met with the head of the Central Election Commission.

“There is a need to briefly discuss the results of the presidential election through the eyes of the OSCE ODIHR,” Lukashenka suggested to Lidziya Yarmoshyna.

During the meeting, the head of the CEC told Alyaksandr Lukashenka about the results of the meeting with the Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.

In January, the OSCE/ODIHR Election Observation Mission published its final report on the presidential elections in Belarus (document).

“It took them a long time to prepare. However, it is mainly, as I noticed, coincided with the previous one. But there are some proposals, demands to us,” said the head of state.

The CEC divided the observations and recommendations of the OSCE into three categories. In the first group ended up the recommendations calling for changes in the Constitution and therefore a referendum. The second group included the CEC proposals for changes to the electoral law. And the third group consists of recommendations for improving the legal enforcement.

Lidziya Yarmoshyna promised the president of Belarus that the expert group on the OSCE recommendations will be established today. It will work under the supervision of the CEC and in a month will make recommendations or suggestions about the comments made by the OSCE report.

OSCE representatives are hoping that the government will adapt the electoral legislation before the parliamentary elections in the country. Parliamentary elections will be held in the fall.
