The Astravets NPP will be built, but Lithuania should raise in Brussels the issue on limiting electricity import from the plant, said former Deputy Minister of Energy and Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
The diplomat noted that the construction of two nuclear power plants near Lithuania and Poland is a geopolitical decision to make life difficult for the entire Baltic region.
According to him, there was not enough money for the construction of the Kaliningrad nuclear power plant, and the construction of the Astravets NPP continues.
“It is already a problem for us, and it is a problem not only in terms of nuclear safety – it will also have economic and the systemic consequences. For the electricity power system it will have the geopolitical consequences. We will be cooking in the cauldron of discussions, disagreements, and all sorts of disputes with neighbors. No one needs a programmed conflict with neighbors, we should be friends with them,” Belsat quotes the diplomat saying.
According to Lithuania, the nuclear power plant in Astravets is constructed with violations of safety requirements and without complying with the international requirements. The commercial terms of delivery of this power could be limited now, but physical restrictions could be put later, when the work of network synchronization with continental Europe begins.
