Georgia President Giorgi Margvelashvili has arrived in Belarus on an official visit on Wednesday, 1 March, the media report.

The ceremony of official welcome for Georgia President Giorgi Margvelashvili took place at the Palace of Independence, where the Georgian leader was welcomed by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko.

The heads of state are holding a one-on-one meeting and extended negotiations with the participation of the members of the delegations on Wednesday.

“We are always glad to see our Georgian brothers in Belarus,” Alexander Lukashenko said to Giorgi Margvelashvili.

The Belarusian leader underlined a breakthrough in the bilateral relations in the past two years. He stressed that the trade growth rates that Belarus has with Georgia are unprecedented for the country, even if compared with EAEC states.

The sides are expected discuss a wide range of issues concerning the development of bilateral cooperation. Special attention will be drawn to the enhancement of the trade and economic interaction. After the talks a number of bilateral documents will be signed.

In 2016, the bilateral trade of Belarus and Georgia made up $73.2 million (up 63% over 2015). The export reached $57.4 million, the import – $15.8 million (70.2%). Belarus exported 318 items of products to Georgia last year.

It was reported earlier that the program of the official visit of the Georgia president also includes meetings with the Belarusian government officials, members of the National Assembly, visits to organizations, social and cultural facilities.
