Lithuania Recognises Tikhanovskaya As Belarusian National Elected Leader

Lithuania became the first state recognising Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as the national elected leader in a resolution issued by the Seimas of Lithuania on 10 September. Its members also called on the international community to prevent Russia’s interference in the affairs of Belarus.
In the resolution, ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and the Coordination Council are named the only legitimate representatives of the Belarusian people.
The document reads: “In response to the recent events in neighboring Belarus, the Seimas called on the international community:
1) to support the demand by Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the leader elected by Belarusian people, and by the Coordination Counci established at her invitation as the only legitimate representatives of the Belarusian people for new, transparent and democratic parliamentary elections.
2) to consider any action of illegitimate leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in domestic and foreign policy aimed at legitimising his power and concluding new international agreements with Russia which restrict the sovereignty of the Belarusian people as a crime against his people, null and void and not recognised by the internatioanl community – de facto annexatiob of the country.”
It also calls on the international community to offer the Belarusian people and their legal representatives various political, economic, financial and visa benefits and other assistance measures.
The document urges Russia not to interfere in the domestic and foreign policy of Belarus and warns about introduction of additional sanctions against Russia and representatives of the Belarusian authorities “if there are attempts to limit the country’s sovereignty against the will of the Belarusian people.”
Out of 141 Seimas members, 91 members voted for the resolution. Members of the ruling Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance did not participate in the voting. The party leader, MEP Waldemar Tomashevsky said: “We should not judge our neighbors, but promote dialogue,” Delfi reports.
