Pskov paratroopers have arrived in Belarus, Interfax reported on September 15 with reference to the Ministry of Defense of the republic. According to the official statement, they arrived to participate in exercises near the western borders of the country on September 14-25. The event is called “Slavic Brotherhood”.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, 300 servicemen of the Pskov Guards unit of the Airborne Forces and 70 units of military and special equipment were sent to Belarus. In the republic, they should be engaged in “working out the coordination of units in the implementation of tactical counter-terrorist tasks.” The department assured that after the exercises, the military will return to their homeland.

In total, up to 1,500 servicemen, over 150 units of aviation, combat and special equipment will be involved in the maneuvers. Earlier it was reported about Serbia’s refusal to take part in the exercises “Slavic Brotherhood 2020”. The authorities announced pressure from the European Union.

Recently, Vladimir Putin and Alyaksandr Lukashenka agreed that Russia would withdraw the pool of the security forces stationed near the border with Belarus, which was previously created at the request of Lukashenka against the backdrop of protests in the country that began on August 9. Residents have repeatedly expressed fears that the Russian authorities may send troops to the territory of the republic to disperse peaceful protests.
