The Presidium of the United Pro-democratic Forces on July 15 greeted Jerzy Buzek of Poland on his election as president of the European Parliament.

In the message, the Presidium expressed hope that Belarus "will continue to remain in the focus of Europe’s attention," and "Mr. Buzek will take strong efforts to promote European values in Belarus and ensure the restoration of democratic rights and freedoms in the republic."

The message of greeting was sent following the Presidium’s meeting held in Minsk on Wednesday. The meeting also focused on efforts to familiarize people in the country with the opposition coalition`s proposals for tackling the impact of the global financial crisis.

A thousand bulletins featuring the coalition’s Anti-crisis Platform were distributed near plants, at retail markets and shopping centers in Minsk within a week, along with the newspapers Narodnaya Volya, Novy Chas and Tovarishch. "It was decided to continue the campaign and make it well-organized," said the coalition’s press office.

"Previously, groups affiliated with the United Pro-democratic Forces carried out such campaigns separately. But now, it will be a single information campaign," Anatol Lyabedzka, leader of the United Civic Party who chairs the Forces, was quoted as saying.

The coordination is needed to ensure that the bulletins are distributed everywhere, not only among the staff of major plants such as the Minsk Automobile Plant and the Minsk Tractor Works, Mr. Lyabedzka said.
