The European Union threatens to impose severe sanctions on Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the Belarusian leader, and his assistants. At the same time Minsk high-ranking officials are trying to find protection in Vilnius, reports Lietuvos rytas.

According to Lithuanian diplomats’ unofficial information, the head of the Belarusian President’s administration Uladzimir Makei visited Lithuania a few days ago.

Representatives of the President’s press service claimed that Lukashenka’s messenger met the President’s assistant Darus Semashko. Answering the question who had invited Makei and what the conversation had been about, the President’s press secretary Linas Balsis said: "The meeting was one of the steps in the series launched by Lithuania as the country presiding in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe aimed at protecting human rights and the freedom of speech in Belarus".

Makei is number two after Lukashenka on the list of personae non gratae drawn up by the EU member states.
