What will Lukashenka prefer: sanctions or free elections

Agency of Financial News

The Belarusian government and the USA have found a new way of possible political exchange – Minsk changes the electoral code, the USA lift sanctions against a number of Belarusian enterprises of the Belneftekhim concern.

The possibility of such a political exchange was confirmed by the Chargé d'Affaires a.i. Michael Scanlan.

"…The negotiation process is going on. The decision will be made at the end of November… I think everybody understands, and the Belarusian government as well, what led to the sanctions. This is, namely, problems in the area of human rights and elections. So the decision about lifting sanctions will be taken regarding what will actually take place in these areas from this moment and till the end of November", said the diplomat in the interview with Narodnaja vola.

The authorities have a lot of time for adoption of the announced liberal changes. It is no coincidence that Michael Scanlan made it clear that the ball is now on Belarus’s side.

"The reality will dictate which decision the United States will take", he noted.

At the same time, Michael Scanlan highlighted that the USA do not exert political pressure on Belarus.

"There are no illusions that democracy can be brought from without. Each society must seek its way to democracy, and there is no perfect way", said the diplomat.
