New charge brought against Byalyatski

Trail against Ales Byalyatski, the head of Viasna human rights centre and Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights, continues today in the Pershamaiski district court of Minsk.


On November 10, the trial was adjourned till November 16 on motion by prosecutor Valery Saikouski, who asked some time to prepare a new charge against Byalyatski. Byalyatski was earlier charged with tax evasion on an especially large scale. He may face up to 7 years in prison.

The trial was resumed at 10 am today. The courtroom was full with people, among them representatives of diplomatic missions of Germany, the UK, Lithuania and the European Commission, Radio Liberty reports. Head of the Belarusian Association of Journalists Zhanna Litvina, head of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka, BPF leader Alyaksei Yanukevich, politician Vintsuk Vyachorka came to court.

The prosecutor read out a new charge, which differs from the previous one only by a phrase "in execution of previously concluded agreements".

The trial has been adjourned till November 22.
