Emanuelis Zingeris: Decision on Belarus should be taken in The Hague

A member of the Lithuanian Parliament thinks human rights abusers in Belarus should be prosecuted.

The chairman of the international affairs committee of the Lithuanian Seimas, Emanuelis Zingeris, offered during the discussion of the Belarusian issue in the PACE Committee on Political Affairs the decision on Belarus should be sought in The Hague, Narodnaya Volia newspaper writes.

He reminded in this regard the problem of abducted and killed opponents of the Belarusian regime, the crimes that remain uninvestigated, is still on the agenda.

On behalf of Lithuania, Emanuelis Zingeris apologized for what happened to human rights activist Ales Byalyatski, who was convicted on the grounds of the documents disclosed by Lithuania and Poland on request of the Belarusian law enforcement agencies. "This is success of the Belarusian security services and our defeat", Emanualis Zingeris said.

The hearing in Strasbourg was attended by leader of the United Civil Party Anatol Lyabedzka, leader of For Freedom movement Alyaksandr Milinkevich and Lyubou Kavalyova, the mother of sentenced to death Uladzislau Kavalyou.

Voting on the draft resolution on Belarus is expected to be held in Strasbourg on January 25.
