Westerwelle: Belarus is disgrace for Europe

Guido Westerwelle made this remark during a parliamentary debate in the Bundestag, Radio Svaboda reports with a link to DAPD.

The chief of the German MFA expressed his concern about the situation in Belarus: "What is happening there is a disgrace for Europe. Democracy and the rule of law are keystones of European values. No progress on the path to the EU is possible without them".

"It also concerns Ukraine", the minister added.

Observers note Berlin has recently begun to criticize policy provided by Viktor Yanukovych and place his regime in rank with the Alyaksandr Lukashenka regime. This attitude was voiced out yesterday by Chancellor Angela Merkel. During her foreign and security policy speech to the parliament yesterday, she called Ukraine a dictatorship for the first time and compared it with Belarus, one of Europe's most isolated countries, Reuters reports.
