Iryna Khalip, Tom Stoppard share British Pen Pinter Prize

Playwright Tom Stoppard has collected this year's Pen Pinter Prize at the British Library in London.

It was known that Tom Stoppard had won the prize several days ago. As for the fact that Belarusian journalist Iryna Khalip was chosen to be the co-recipient of the writer of courage award, it was announced in the evening on October 7, Radio Liberty reports.

According to Stoppard, Khalip was chosen in recognition of her vocal criticism of her native government in spite of intimidation and imprisonment. He also noted that, for him, "it is an honour to share the prize with the courageous journalist".

The PEN Pinter Prize is an annual literary award launched in 2009 by English PEN in honour of the late Harold Pinter, who had been an active member of PEN's Writers in Prison Committee. The award is shared between a British writerand an international winner – an imprisoned or persecuted writer of courage.
