Fűle: Improving relations only after freeing political prisoners

Belsat

On December 3, 2013 Anatol Liabedzka, leader of the United Civic Party, met with Štefan Fűle, the EU`s commissioner for enlargement and neighborhood policy.

'Brussels upholds a concerted porition that unfreezing relations with Minsk will remain impossible until the political prisoners are released and exonerated. No compromise and concessions are expected in this field. This is good but not enough. Belarus needs fair and free elections. It is them which gives a chance and prospect of change. But at the moment Brussels is not considering fair elections as another condition for a turn to unfreezing relationships with Minsk. But Mr Fűle made a remark that fair elections must become the core of a political dialogue,' the party's official website quotes Mr Liabedzka as saying.

Anatol Liabedzka launched the initiative of making a list of persons violating the Constitution and international obligations. 'We will give serious considerations to your proposal,' the EU's Commissioner answered.
It is to be recalled that on November 29, 2013, during the Vilnius EaP summit, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt declared that the European Union`s stance on Belarus had not changed. ‘Our demands are the same—the release of the political prisoners and democratization,’ Mr. Bildt said.

‘Mr Makey [Belarusian Foreign Minister] knows what should be done,’ he said. ‘I think that it is possible for him to influence the decision-making process’.
