Central election commission puts voter turnout in local elections at 77.3 percent

As many as 5,391,103 people, or 77.3 percent of all registered voters, cast their ballots in Belarus’ March 18-23 local elections, reported the central election commission.

According to the commission, the voter turnout was 82.29 percent in the Vitsyebsk region, 80.95 percent in the Mahilyow region, 80.83 percent in the Homyel region, 80.74 percent in the Minsk region, 80 percent in the Brest region, 79.96 percent in the Hrodna region, and 61.61 percent in the city of Minsk.

A total of 73.86 percent of all registered voters cast their ballots in the repeat election for the House of Representatives in Homyel`s Electoral District No. 36, the commission said.

As many as 2,231,870 people reportedly cast their ballots during the five-day early voting period, or 32.04 percent of the total number of eligible voters.

The turnout was 26.46 percent in the repeat election for the House of Representatives. Thus, 45.23 percent of voters cast their ballot in the local elections and 47.4 percent in the repeat election on March 23, the main voting day.

According to the central election commission, the voter turnout was 79.1 in the previous, 2010 local elections and 79.2 percent in the 2007 local elections.
