Sixteen children and a swimming instructor were hospitalized with signs of chlorine poisoning in Minsk on April 24.

The children, all students of School No. 105, complained of cough and eye irritation during their swimming class at another school's swimming pool, Yuliya Hancharova, spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee, told BelaPAN. They were immediately led out of the building and taken by ambulances to hospitals.

Only four children remained hospitalized on Thursday evening. Their condition was described as non-life-threatening.

The Investigative Committee has instituted criminal proceedings in connection with the incident under Article 336 of the Criminal Code that penalizes violations of sanitary rules.

Investigators have already examined the scene, taking away the equipment used to add sodium hypochlorite to the water in the swimming pool for an examination.
