The Brest Regional Court on August 19 upheld a six-year prison sentence imposed on a 32-year-old man who shot and killed another man during a hunt in the Malaryta district, Brest region, on a night in October 2013.

The member of the Kobryn district chapter of the Belarusian Association of Hunters and Fishermen fired a shot at a car after the driver ignored his companion’s request to stop, Vera Filonik, a prosecutor at the Brest Regional Prosecutor's Office, told BelaPAN.

A passenger in the Audi car, a father of three small children, was wounded in the head and died on the spot.

According to Ms. Filonik, the convict appealed the sentence, claiming that he had killed the man by accident, but the Brest Regional Court rejected the appeal after concluding that the man had aimed and shot intentionally, and that he had been able to see the driver and the passenger in the car while shining his flashlight at the vehicle.

The man, a resident of a village in the Kobryn district, had no previous convictions.
