The capital of Belarus has been awarded 19th position in the Top 20 Sportcal Global Sports Cities Index, the National Olympic Committee reports.

The Global Sports Cities Index 2016 was revealed during the Global Sports Tourism Summit at the World Travel Market in London on Monday, November 14.

Minsk received 4,643 points and soared by 32 positions to 19th place in the rating. Such a success is explained by the fact that the Belarusian capital has recently won the right to host the European Games in 2019.

Minsk already has experience in hosting major international competitions, including the 2010 Kontinental Hockey League All-Star Game, World Junior Figure Skating Championships in 2012, the 2014 IIHF World Hockey Championship, FIFA Futsal World Cup and the 2015 Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships.

London retains its status as the sportiest city in the world for five years, according to the Sportcal Index. With more data than ever before available on the Sportcal Events platform, the Global Sports Cities Index is calculated over a 14-year period, covering seven years in the past and seven years in the future (2010-2023).
