New international checkpoint Losha-Šumskas is to open in the near future. The relevant decision was made by the Belarusian parliament on Tuesday, TUT.BY reports.

At present the crossing is open to borderland residents only. The Belarusian side said it is ready to upgrade the status of Losha-Šumskas to international and make it open to persons regardless of their citizenship.

The measure is supposed to help solve the problem of queues at Kamenny Log checkpoint, located some 20 km away from it.

Now it’s up to the Lithuanian side to confirm the international status of Losha-Šumskas, Belarusian officials said.

Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign affairs sent a note to Belarus on the international car border crossing point at Losha-Šumskas in 2015. The work to transfer the checkpoint on the joint border in the category of international started and was discussed at the meeting of the representatives of Belarus and Lithuania MFAs in April this year.

Currently there are four international car border crossing points between the two countries.
