Man sentenced to death for murdering his two children

Kiryl Kazachok, a 39-year-old resident of Mazyr, was sentenced on Wednesday to death for murdering his two children.A judge of the Homyel Regional Court found Mr. Kazachok guilty of strangling his 17-year-old son Uladzislaw and nine-year-old daughter Kira at their home in Mazyr on January 31, 2016.
After the man committed the murders, he is said to have gone to an apartment that his wife was renting together with their eldest son and to have told the woman what he had done. Then he called the police and attempted to kill himself by jumping from a fourth-floor balcony.
The man survived the fall and was admitted to the resuscitation unit of the Mazyr Central District Hospital with concussion, a spine injury, a hip fracture and several bruises.
The man was found to have 236 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of his blood.
In March, the man was transferred from the hospital to a detention center.
He had previously been convicted of disorderly conduct and physical violence. He is known to abuse alcohol.
The man had attempted to commit suicide twice before.
According to the prosecution, the man killed his children to take revenge on his wife who filed for divorce in October 2015.
The pair was earlier divorced but then got married again.
The trial was held behind closed doors.
