Belarus is one of the worst places in Europe to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex, according to its laws.

The latest findings of the annual Rainbow Europe survey were made public by Ilga-Europe, which reviews the rights situation of LGBTIQ people in European countries.

According to the ILGA-Europe Rainbow map and index for 2018, Belarus holds 42nd position out of 49 European countries in the homophobia ranking.

Worse than in Belarus the situation only is in Moldova, San Marino, Russia, Monaco, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Actually, Azerbaijan fared the worst in this year’s ranking. For the third consecutive year, Malta is the most tolerant country in the ranking.

It is followed by Belgium, Norway, Great Britain, Finland, France and Portugal.

The ranking was composed by acessing six parameters:
- equality and non-discrimination,
- the opportunity to create a family,
- hate crime and hate speech,
- legal gender recognition and the opportunity to change sex,
- the opportunity to be a part of civil society,
- providing shelter to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.
