As of 4 May, 17,489 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Belarus, the press service of the Healthcare Ministry reports.

17,489 COVID-19 patients make up 8,2% of the number of 211,369 coronavirus tests conducted in the country. 3,259 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals.

A total of 103 coronavirus patients have died, plus four people since 3 May. In the last 24 hours, the increase amounted to 784 new cases. This is less than in the last nine days, when 800-900 new cases were confirmed a day.

Recall that epidemiologist Viktor Suschevich projects the peak incidence of coronavirus on the twentieth of May, after which the epidemic will decline.

To develop collective immunity in the country, about 60-70% of the population should get infected and recover. On 3 May, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko stated that only 10% of lung ventilators are currently in use in Belarus.

Earlier the WHO experts who visited Belarus in April described the situation in Belarus as concerning and called on the immediate implementation of community-wide measures of physical distancing.

In late April, Brussels promised to provide Belarus with financial aid of €60 million for combatting COVID-19 on condition that the country complies with WHO recommendations.

“We give and offer help. But on the other hand, we ask [the Belarusian side] to follow the World Health Organisation’s advice on the pandemic,” Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said.
