Man Sets Himself On Fire Near House Of Government, His Motives Unclear
A 35-year-old man set himself on fire near the Government House in Independence Square in Minsk. According to preliminary information, he poured some liquid on himself and set it on fire. The unnamed man is currently in hospital.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident that took place in central Minsk on Friday, 22 January. They report that the guards put out the fire with fire extinguishers, an ambulance arrived at the scene and took the man away. The scene is cordoned off.

In video and photos by eyewitnesses, the man could be seen on fire on a largely empty square near a statue of Lenin, with several people rushing towards him. Later the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry reported that the man is unconscious. During the initial medical examination, paramedics diagnosed him with more than 50% body burn. He was taken to the Republican Burn Center.

“According to the investigation, in the afternoon of 22 January, a 35-year-old man doused himself with an unidentified liquid before setting himself on fire in front of a building located on Sovetskaya Street in Minsk. A passer-by and a law enforcement officer put the flames out. He is now hospitalized in a health care institution,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

The motives for the man’s actions are not immediately clear and investigators are working to establish the background.
