A draft Education Code currently under consideration in the House of Representatives would ban political parties and religious organizations from conducting any activities at schools of higher learning, Uladzimir Zdanovich, chairman of the lower chamber's education committee, said at its meeting on February 23.

"Higher education in Belarus will remain secular," the lawmaker said.

He noted that Belarusian State University has the Sts. Methodius and Cyril Theology Institute. "We will have to either close our eyes to this or add a special provision about this to the Code," Mr. Zdanovich said.

The lower chamber has already given first-reading approval to the draft Code.
