Viktar Buzinayew, chairman of the Babruysk city organization of the opposition United Civic Party (UCP), was summoned to the Babruysk office of the KGB on Friday and questioned about the party’s activities regarding the forthcoming House of Representatives elections.

"I was told at the KGB that while I was formerly convicted of minor civil offenses, now I might face charges under the Criminal Code," Mr. Buzinayew said in an interview with the Belarus Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. "A KGB officer warned that I should think hard before participating in anything. He repeated several times that if the party campaigned under the slogan of ‘Fair Elections without Lukashenka,’ this would be viewed as discrediting the government and the Lukashenka, which he said is an offense punishable under the Criminal Code."
