The Council of Ministers has, by its directive, ordered the health ministry to devise a procedure for drawing up a list of individuals who have refused to donate their organs and tissues in the event of death and individuals who have undergone transplant operations.

The directive will allow authorities to supervise the use of human organs and tissues and provide timely medical assistance to people waiting for transplants, according to the Council of Ministers press office.

Belarus ranks first among the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in terms of the number of transplant surgeries, the press office said.

As many as 251 organ transplant operations were reportedly carried out in Belarus in the first 11 months of 2011, including 50 liver transplantations, 182 kidney transplantations, and 19 heart transplantations.
