A new law that provides for the confiscation of vehicles from owners caught twice driving while intoxicated came into force in Belarus on October 24.
The law was adopted by the parliament in June.
Under the law, a car driven by a drunk person will be confiscated by the state even when the driver is not the owner of the vehicle.
Stolen cars driven by drunk persons are the only vehicles excluded from confiscation.
According to the law, the confiscated cars will be sold and the money received from the sale will go either to the state treasury or to individuals affected by accidents caused by drunk drivers.
The law will also be used against foreign nationals driving under intoxication.
